Proposals are invited for contributions to a special issue on“Mapping Iranian Languages”. We welcome articles exploring all topics related to the cartographic representation of Iranian languages. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
  • history of mapping Iranian languages
  • data sources for language maps
  • mapping-focused documentation and fieldwork
  • cartographic technologies, techniques and innovations
  • original analyses and maps of geographically defined linguistic data, e.g., feature maps, isogloss maps, heat maps
  • updated and refined mapping of language distribution in specific regions
  • alternative language map types, including conceptual maps
  • interactions between language mapping and language classification
  • critical analysis of mapping projects, map series, and individual maps
The collected articles will encompass Iranian languages in the broadest sense, that is, both the Iranic (Iranian) language family, and languages from other families spoken in the geographic area covered by present-day Iran.   In place of Iranian Studies’ traditional book review section, critical reviews and analyses of language atlas projects, map series, and individual maps focusing on Iranian languages are expressly solicited either as research reviews (250 to 1500 words), or as full-length research articles or “sources uncovered” essays.   We anticipate a special issue containing between 6 and 15 full-length articles, and 5 research reviews.   Key dates: December 15, 2024: Potential contributors submit article abstracts/proposals. December 30, 2024: Notification of invitations to contribute. January 2026: Anticipated publication date.   Submission instructions: Please submit article abstracts/proposals (max. 200 words, plus any images) via email to the special issue editors, Erik Anonby (erik.anonby AT carleton.ca), Habib Borjian (hb146 AT columbia.edu), and Mortaza Taheri-Ardali (taheriling AT gmail.com).   Special Issue Call at Further information and a detailed publication schedule are available from the special issue editors.
