The first volume of the new series Afro-Eurasian Transformations – Ancient Worlds and Beyond, edited by Robert Rollinger and Julian Degen, was published on 23 September 2026 under the title Contextualizing Imperial Borderlands: 9th Century BCE – 9th Century CE and Beyond.

The volume brings together a collection of papers focusing on territories situated beyond the direct control of empires, where more subtle and elusive traces of imperial influence can nevertheless be identified. The contributors approach these areas through the concept of “imperial borderlands,” examining the diverse forms of interaction between imperial structures and territories beyond their direct control.

With a broad chronological and geographical scope, extending from the first millennium BCE to the end of Antiquity and beyond and encompassing the worlds of Afro-Eurasia, the volume presents the first concentrated study of the phenomenon of imperial borderlands. It brings together contributions by specialists working across a range of fields.

The book comprises 515 pages and 56 illustrations and is published in English as a hardback. A free Open Access edition is also available.
