A recent article examines the structures of local government in Bactria on the basis of Bactrian documents dating from the early fourth to the late eighth century CE. Focusing on the regions of Guzgan, Rob, and Kadagstan, Said Reza Huseini argues that local government formed a fundamental element of Bactria’s political structure. These regions were governed by local rulers who administered social, economic, political, and military affairs through local administrative structures and personnel. The article also traces the persistence of this model under successive Iranian, Hunnic, Turkic, and Arab Muslim political regimes, arguing that local government was particularly well adapted to the diverse geography and population of Bactria.
